Scotty ATL – Trappin Gold [Album Review]

Scotty ATL – Trappin Gold [Album Review]

They say all that glitters ain’t gold, but in the case of Scotty ATL’s latest album the bling is real. Trappin Gold is a purely platinum listening experience which will appeal to Scotty’s core audience as well as newcomers to the Cool Club.

Big features by Bun B and Ace Hood are icing on the cake for what is already a plateful of bangers. The addition of Texas and Florida rap greats adds dimension to the underground Atlanta sound Scotty is known for. The screwed up vibe of “Diamonds Wink Back” is also a testament to his ability to experiment but still “Hol It Down” in his “Own Lane.”

The album opens with a recorded voice message of encouragement from David Banner: “Sometimes people will hate you because you’re growing…and maybe even outgrowing them. Sometimes you are a mirror to what they are not willing to do…” The message may have been intended for Scotty, but it’s an important reminder to us all what we must go through for our dream.

Always a hustling entrepreneur, Scotty breaks down the independent grind on “7 Days a Week”: “Makin big plans / got a trip planned / tell Halle Berry I’m a big fan / this a big deal / I’m independent / I make moves no big deal.” The trap beat makes this song a standout street anthem along with the single and accompanying video for “The Shop” featuring King Shy.

Definitely more on the trap side than we’re accustomed to hearing from Scotty, Trappin Gold still keeps it classic with songs like “Virgin Oil” and “Devotion.” The transformative evolution of this project balances out with a couple shake joint tracks: “Bussdown” and “Love Wit a Freak.” Speaking of, Scotty showed out at “Why Not Magic City Kitchen” for the album release party as well as the “Trappin Gold” experience at Our Bar ATL. Not even “The Curfew” and COVID-19 can halt the grind.

On a personal note, 2019’s $tream$ sort of came and flew by on my radar during a hectic time. Going back for a comparative listen, I can honestly say I’m about to give it another “100k” streams this week.

Be sure to follow Scotty on Instagram @scottyatl and hit him up if you need a custom gold grill (get some diamonds, don’t be cheap).
