Sonny Digital & Black Boe Combine Forces on “Black Goat 2” [Ms Rivercity Review]

Sonny Digital and Black Boe present Black Goat 2, a 9-track trunk-rattling compilation hosted by DJ Campus Legend. While Sonny comes to the forefront as a rapper on this project, his seasoned production skills are clearly evident on the two instrumentals he crafted — “Wassup” featuring Skooly (co-produced by Mathaius Young) and “Psychedelic Earthquake” (co-produced by Black Boe). Although it’s difficult to propose only some of the best selects from Black Goat 2, these two standout songs solidify the mixtape as a stellar body of professional work.

“Wassup” is highly repeatable. The catchy hook makes clever wordplay out of Rich Kidz’ 2009 hits “Wassup” and “My Patna Dem”, an ode to Skooly’s beginnings with the Atlanta rap group.

“Hey Skool Boy, shout out the the Rich Kidz, sure gotta mention…”

For those who don’t know, Black Boe is formerly known as Quez, 1/3 of the popular trio Travis Porter who was also coming up around the same time as Rich Kidz. It’s refreshing to see the evolution of all of these artists and how they’ve come together over the years to achieve greatness on all levels.

Speaking of greatness, the mixtape’s lead single, “A Million”, is accompanied by a new video release. Produced by Project and Rio Leyva, “A Million” is a certified Traps-N-Trunks banger with major-rotation potential.

Sonny and Black Boe did an excellent job choosing well-rounded instrumentals to complement their verses. Along with the aforementioned producers, Black Goat 2 features a solid list of quality beatmakers like Nebu Kiniza, Animal, Ghostrage, and Mino. “Squat” is another banger worth quite a few listens.

Overall, this is a project that highlights Sonny Digital’s growth as a lyricist, producer, and composer, along with Black Boe’s transition into a heavy-hitting solo artist. There is nothing missing from this mixtape — trap beats, club hits, and trippy vibe-out tunes — Black Goat 2 has it all and leaves nothing to be desired.
